Five Holistic Ways to Manage ADHD Symptoms

Managing ADHD symptoms is like a dance, sometimes wild, sometimes routine, but always present in the lives of those who carry it. Yet, there are natural ways to guide them back to feeling like themselves again. Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders affecting both children and adults. While medication is often prescribed, many seek holistic approaches to manage symptoms or to complement treatment. In this article, we share five holistic ways to manage ADHD symptoms that we commonly use in our counseling practice in Conyers, Georgia.

1. Neurofeedback

Neurofeedback is a non-invasive therapy that trains the brain to function more effectively. With practice, clients become aware of their psychophysiological patterns and responses. Neurofeedback teaches the brain to watch itself and implement changes that improve the practitioner’s life. Much like learning to draw or play kickball, the more someone practices, the more pronounced the improvements. Clients learn to hold onto these changes in a lasting way, regardless of the environment—at work, school, or home.

One of our favorite programs, Play Attention, combines neurofeedback with cognitive training. By using sensors to monitor brain activity, the program helps individuals develop better focus, memory, and impulse control. Studies show that consistent use of neurofeedback can lead to significant improvements in ADHD symptoms, making it an excellent option for those seeking a natural approach.

2. Talk Therapy

Talk therapy, particularly Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), is a well-established method for managing ADHD. CBT helps individuals identify and change negative thought patterns and behaviors associated with ADHD. By addressing issues like procrastination, low self-esteem, and relationship difficulties, talk therapy empowers people to manage their symptoms more effectively. In our counseling practice, we’ve had clients experience transformative improvements in functioning and well-being by combining talk therapy with other therapeutic approaches like neurofeedback.

3. Behavior Modification Education

Behavior modification involves teaching individuals specific strategies to manage their ADHD symptoms.

Behavior modifications that improve the symptoms of ADHD include:

  • reward systems
  • setting clear goals
  • establishing routines

Parents and teachers often play a key role in implementing these strategies with children, but adults also benefit from learning behavior modification techniques. When consistently applied, these methods can greatly reduce impulsivity and improve focus.

4. Organizational Skills Training

In the dance of life, there are rhythms we must learn to keep: appointments, work or school schedules, chores, and self-care routines. ADHD can cause this dance to feel chaotic, but organizational skills training makes it easier to find the beat and keep the rhythm.

Organizational skills training focuses on teaching practical techniques such as:

  • time management
  • prioritization
  • task segmentation

Organizational tools can be invaluable, which might include:

  • planners
  • apps
  • phone alarms
  • reminders

Developing organizational skills not only helps manage ADHD symptoms but also improves overall productivity and reduces stress.

5. Self-Image Improvement

ADHD symptoms sometimes impact a person’s self-esteem, particularly when they lead to academic or social difficulties.

Self-image improvement strategies for those with ADHD include:

  • affirmations
  • mindfulness
  • positive self-talk

By improving their self-image, individuals with ADHD are more likely to engage in positive behaviors and feel empowered to tackle challenges. Self-image improvement is a practice, a daily affirmation of who we are. It is the quiet strength of loving yourself, not despite but because of all that you are.

These holistic approaches to managing ADHD focus on empowering individuals through practical, evidence-based methods that improve overall well-being. ADHD may be a part of your journey, but it is not the whole of it. These five holistic approaches—neurofeedback, talk therapy, behavior modification, organizational skills training, and self-image improvement—offer a different way to reclaim balance and peace. Look to these gentle treatments to create a life where ADHD is not a burden but a rhythm that can be danced to with ease and grace.
